Recently my story appeared over on the amazing Nutrition Guru and The Chef blog. Real, Raw and Honest are words that describe the interview about my crazy days with food.
Thank you for all the love and support. There’s something about a raw, honest authentic story that speaks from one heart to another. I’m so glad it has been of service to so many people so far. If you haven’t read it, you can find the interview here.
When I was crazy about food my life was completely different to how it is now. I was uptight, unsettled, disorganised, erratic, moody and quite frankly I was one heck of a controlling bitch! Life had to fit the mould, rather than be moulded into a way that felt good.
I remember trying everything and anything to help myself to feel better. And now I’ve been there and done that, I can share with you 5 of my favourite life savers for when you’re crazy about food and you have no idea what the heck to do…but you know you want and need to do something (different) stat.
5 Ways To Get Unstuck Around Food Related Craziness
1. To get better you need to want to get better. Get honest with yourself:
// How much is this food related craziness costing you and your life?
// How much longer are you prepared to stay stuck in this mess?
// How does this life stack up to the life you dream about or dreamed about living when you were younger?
For the rubber to meet the road you have to want to change, more than you want to stay stuck.
2. Dream a little dream: Create your vision
“Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be. Your ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil” James Allen
Deep down I know you know that you deserve so much more for yourself and that you can have so much more for yourself. When you set an intention for a more loving, compassionate and free way of living, you open yourself up to a brand new perception of how your life can be.
Does it allow you to eat your favourite foods without guilt? Are you enjoying meals with family and friends without rules and rigidity? Are you nourishing your body from a place of acceptance and compassion?
This step is about getting bold- brave- and daring and writing down everything, big or small, that would be the most perfect life to be living. Because intention is energy. You create your life with every though, every dream and every intention.
And when you start to stare a dream eye to eye, you can’t help but feel electric- bright eyed- and heart centered.
“Meditation is a tool to shake yourself awake. A way to discover what you love. A practice to return yourself to your body when the mind medleys threaten to unsurp your sanity” Geneen Roth
I love a guided meditation that drops me deep into mentally and physically scanning over my body and tuning into it. I thought that if I stopped fighting what I thought I was feeling and instead started to notice what I am feeling, I might be able to dissolve the pain.
With awareness (the ability to know what you are feeling) and presence (the ability to inhabit a feeling) it is possible to be with what you believe is hurting you, without being hurt.
Meditation allows you to realize that stories are just stories. As a teacher once told me “meditation lets your thoughts leave your quietly, like a train passing a station. Some thoughts are best left on the express train, and some deserve to stop at the station and disembark”.
You will learn to come back to your body, which has all the information you need.
There are many fantastic ways to meditate. When I began learning to meditate I found it incredibly valuable to use guided meditations. Visit Connie Chapman, Melissa Ambrosini and Claire Obeid for great guided meditations.
4. Do something each day which you love
I wrote this week about how ‘Love Lists’ are my saving grace. By doing something each day- big, small or otherwise- I am filling up my cup with love. You can read all about love lists here. Honestly this is such a practical way to generate more and more abundance into your life.
This tip is so incredibly straight forward but you know what? Feeling good doesn’t need to be complicated or something extra special you do/ buy/ go to. It’s all about the little things, and doing the little things consistently and with presence.
5. Change the way you think to change the way you live.
This is a biggie. The other day a client told me she calls herself ‘Fat Judy’. I stopped her right then and there and said ‘That has to stop’. If you tell yourself something enough, you know whats going to happen….you’re going to believe it.
Changing your thoughts starts with changing how you talk to yourself. And one of the best ways I know to do this is to become more mindful about your voice vs the voice of your inner ‘skinny girl’ aka ego, inner critic, inner mean girl.
You are not your thoughts even though you may think you are. As soon as you can get clear on the fact that we all have an inner nasty voice that tries to keep us safe and small, you will start to free yourself from going crazy. To read more about the ‘skinny girl’ read here and here.
Comment below and tell me which of these tips you are going to try to help you stop being crazy around food. And please share this post with your friends if it resonated with you. That would mean so much to me to spread this message of how to beat food related craziness together.
