The thought of gaining weight frightens my clients beyond belief.
I get it because I’ve had to do a lot of work around my ‘anxieties’ around gaining weight and digging deep into what ‘weight’ really means to me. For example I used to strongly believe that my weight represented who I was as a person- if I was thinner I was happier, healthier and more successful- therefore more likeable. I felt I would ‘fit in’ better.
Going to places where you muster the courage to face what it is that scares you beyond belief- which for me was really facing weight underpinning my self worth- is damn hard.
But…as you will discover in my upcoming FREE Ebook Be Free: A heart Centered Guide To Change Your Relationship With Food And Your Body, you will learn that when I started to re-assess and care for my mental health, the decision making process around food got easier. Which is to say I slowly stop restricting and started nourishing my body without compromising my sanity and physical health.
Because if you’re feeling insane, crazy and depressed, how ‘healthy’ are you?
But to help you to stop waiting on the weight, here is one of my favourite activities to start getting you channelling a brighter, happier and healthier life for yourself.
Future Bright Self Activity
When I got the bitch slap I needed and realised that my life is what I make of, I started to notice that how I was living life wasn’t really how I wanted to live it. I wasn’t happy and I certainly wasn’t happy.
Did I really want to bring children into my life when I was this ‘crazy’?
How much longer would my friends and family put up with this obsessive behaviour until they were drained and exhausted?
Did I really enjoy feeing this lonely, sad and exhausted?
This activity is a simple, yet incredibly effective way to start getting you to work towards something bigger and brighter for yourself. Even giving yourself permission to take the step to envisage something bigger and better for yourself is empowering beyond belief. In my book action starts with a vision. Without a vision you remain stuck.
In this activity I want you to get comfy. Grab a note book and ask yourself:
What it is I’d like to be doing.
How would I like to feel in life?
What do I want more of (e.g. fun, play, laughter, spontaneity, travel)
What do I want less of (e.g. stress, exhaustion)
What would I be doing if you loved yourself more?
- With the information you have written down or thought about, you’re going to write yourself a letter.
- Address this letter to ‘My Future Brighter Self’
- Reflect back on what you want for yourself when you think about a life without the ‘food obsessions’ or your weight being your priority or the focus being on how much you’re ashamed of yourself.
The important thing here is to just write. Let yourself go.
When my clients do this activity it’s really common for them to uncover so much new and rich learning about what it is they are really holding deep inside, which they would love for themselves. Clients have written about desiring:
More beach holidays where they actually swim
Wearing clothes that don’t hide their bodies
Being able to socialise without the cover of booze and for some drugs
Wearing shorts to the gym
Being able to look in the mirror
Smiling and laughing
Enjoying time alone
I challenge you to give this activity a go. I encourage you to put the letter somewhere close where you can refer back it for constant reminders of what’s deeply important to you.
