Funnily enough around the time I started to make the switch from chemical laden products to natural, organic products, a whole lot of people have been asking me questions about this VERY topic.
Little love taps from the universe to tell me it’s time I write to you about my experiences so far.
I’m in NO way a beauty expert. In fact I’m proudly a ‘less is more’ kinda gal and hardly wear any makeup (basically because I don’t really know what to do with it and I loathe the feeling of it caked onto my skin- typical of the chemical based products on the market).
I decided to head down the naked beauty, al-naturale route because I wanted to start releasing my inner feminine a little more. It has become a little mission to explore getting down with makeup because I do in fact like wearing it and know there are products which I can wear which won’t compromise my skin’s integrity and won’t feel yucky.
Insert the LOVELY Emmily Banks, natural makeup Queen from Depths Of Beauty. Emmily did my makeup for the Beautiful You Coaching Academy Inspiration Day (psst: If you want to follow in my footsteps and become a life coach head over here and check out the course!). And I loved all of the products Emmily used on my skin. Like REALLY loved!
They felt good. They lasted. They smelt yummy. They were good for my skin too (no break outs post make up is tops for my moody skin!).
New to natural beauty?
No worries. We all start somewhere and these posts are a great place to start.
Top tip: Emmily’s blog is so handy and you will get lost for hours reading her reviews of all things organic beauty from moisturisers to makeup products.
“Let me ask you this: Would you drink your perfume? Or swallow your sunscreen? Or smear your mascara on your gluten-free toast? Heck no! So why do you put these toxic chemicals on your skin? ”
What I’m using and loving
1. Make up
Ere Perez Beetroot Cheek and Lip Tint: I love to use this both day and night to provide a gorgeous red colour to my lips. It’s great because you can build the colour up to a bright red by simply applying more.
Hurraw Coconut Lip Gloss: I pop this on before I use my beetroot lip tint and then over the top for extra shine. This product isn’t thick, sticky or gluggy. Ultra moisturising and smells divine. Another product I love and still use is the Vitamin Enhanced Lip Balm from Kora Organics, though Hurraw is my fav.
Ere Perez black eyeliner: You’d never be able to tell it’s good for your eyes! Thank me later.
Ere Perez Almond Oil Mascara: This stuff is amazing. No wonder it’s an award winning mascara. No more clumps or gluggy mascara. I have never received more compliments about my lashes.
Karen Murrell Sand Storm Lipstick: Often I like a little nude lip to compliment a really natural look. This gem never lets me down. I like to pop some over the top of nourished lips (I use my Hurraw first to set the lip scene) and then glide this on. Such a beautiful nude colour.
2. Hair care
I’m currently using Faith In Nature Coconut Shampoo and the conditioner. It smells like a dream. I’ve tried many other products but nothing seems to lather as well as this. Any ideas on other products, then please let me know.
Dr Bronner’s Peppermint Organic Hair Creme. I use this after towel drying my hair. I simply apply a tiny amount (a 5 cent piece is plenty for long hair like mine), and work it through the ends especially. Any left over product is gently combed through the crown of my hair using my fingers. I then comb it through. Warning: using too much of this product can make your hair feel heavy and greasy, but otherwise it makes my ends super soft.
Organic Coconut Oil is great to use as a hair mask. After washing and towel drying my hair I then apply about a 20 cent piece (Aussie currency here- otherwise use one pump), and rub my hands together to spread the oil. Then comb it through my hair using my fingers. I then might pop a shower cap on and sleep or leave it in for as long as possible (to penetrate the roots and scalp). Then I lightly shampoo and condition my hair again and viola!
I currently use a hairspray I picked up from a local health food store in Singapore. It’s good but I want to try more, so I will get back to you. In the meantime you can look through some of my fav online stores (further down, so keep reading!).
I have my eye on trying O & M shampoo and conditioner next.
Dr Bronner’s liquid soap: My favourite body wash and soap range. They lather well and the peppermint smells so divine. Very calming yet adds a little ‘uplift’ to my morning too.
About Life Cacao Body Butter: I slather this on my body each night. This is their homemade mix. You can buy it in their stores at their organic beauty bar and I always stock up on it when in Sydney. Otherwise I would use organic coconut oil which is available anywhere. Pop on some cotton pjs to let the body butter/oil really penetrate into the skin. I often get cracked feet and love to rub it in and then pop on some socks.
Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant Paste: Honestly the BEST deodorant ever. This stuff works. My favourite product ever (I live in a humid country so I know what it is like to sweat and border on the smelly side and this product WORKS better than anything I have ever tried!).
One Seed Perfume: One Seed generously sent me a sample pack and I’m loving courage, hope and seeker. Gorgeous! I add a few spritzes throughout the day to keep myself smelling the gorgeous scents as I move through life.
Butter London Nail Polishes: Gorgeous array of colours. I couldn’t go past the red and a pink. I’m in bare feet most of the day (that’s how I work!) and found my polish started to chip after 5 days, which I think is pretty good. I’m going to try Kester Black next.
Do Terra Oils: I recently started exploring Do Terra and aromatherapy. I love serenity to pop onto my wrists during the day. I put in tune into my diffuser on days when I’m working and need to harness some inner soul connection and I use breathe when I’m feeling congested. A little on the feet at night does wonders. Top tip: If you want to explore Do Terra contact my friends Alice Abba or Jewl Hinton for ways to get your mitts on the oils (they are so helpful and pros in the essential oil arena!).
Still exploring this area MASSIVELY but right now I’m lovin’:
Vanessa Megan Petitgrain Cleanser: Vanessa kindly sent me a few of her favourite products and I can see why this is one of them. It smells so natural and beautiful. Honestly it makes washing my face just so enjoyable!!
Vanessa Megan Rosewater Spray: After washing my face I spritz it with this gorgeous hydrating rosewater. So super nourishing and absolutely gorgeous. My skin feels incredibly soft after this and smells like a dream. I use it morning and night and occasionally throughout the day to refresh and uplift my skin. I also have it handy on flights (I travel LOTS) to refresh my skin.
Mukti Balancing Moisturiser: LOVE!! A gorgeous lightweight moisturiser for my face that is exposed to humidity and prone to blemishes. Love it.
Vanessa Megan Natures Elixir Face Oil (N.E.O): I use this one a week at night as a moisturiser to deeply hydrate my skin. I have combination skin which can get dry and irritated if not nourished properly. I tried using this during the day but my skin was just too hot and humid with the heat here in South East Asia.
Organic coconut oil: My go to for pimples. I usually pop some on at night onto any spots and find they clear up quickly.
Kimberly Sayer Tangerine & Calendula Healing Light Night Cream: Great for blemish prone skin yet nourishing. Smells divine.
Still on the hunt for a good exfoliator. If you know any please let me know!
Favourite places to buy organic, natural products online
Nourished Life: The range is sensational. They stock a huge amount of products.
Beautiful Because: I love that they stock Inika makeup which I’m a fan of and Ere Perez (which you can’t get from Natural supply co).
Natural Supply Co: Gorgeous website and the girls are so helpful. I love that they stock many brands that Nourished Life and Beautiful Because don’t- great variety between the 3. They stock Love Ludie candles which I can’t WAIT to try and also O & M products.
Stay tuned for this next instalment coming soon where I talk about my favourite candles, make up update (foundation, bronzer and blush), exfoliator and face masks, eye cream….and more!
