I speak to a lot of women each day about food and their bodies, so naturally I hear a lot about how crazy they are feeling on a daily, minute by minute basis.
…..“I wish I could stop eating all the chocolate when it’s in front of me”
…..“The diet will begin again on Monday. The weekend was such a binge fest”
…..“I’m happy to gain weight as long as it’s muscle NOT fat. No way!”
Essentially all of the above comments have one very common denominator: The fear of gaining weight.
At the heart of everything I hear from the women I work with, to the women I casually talk to, underlying what I strongly believe are the reasons that women control what they eat, to the constant yo-yo dieting, to the beach body diets, to the ‘body flogging’ gym sessions comes down to this inherent fear of gaining weight.
Or in more blunt words ‘feeling fat’ or possibly even more hurtful to think about is being perceived by others as fat.
So it makes perfect sense to say that the fear of weight gain controls us.
Fear of weight gain backs us up against a wall and makes us think there is no other way to eat, live or be.
…..“This is just how it is lady”
…..“This is how it is mean’t to be”
…..“If you want to be happy these are the rules”
And so when you let yourself be controlled by your fear of gaining weight that’s when the cycle begins.
…..you restrict your food
…..consult your fav diet insta pals
…..judge every bite of food
…..scrutinise your body
…..your inner skinny girl voice is loud and nasty
…..you cant help but loathe everything about your body
You honestly feel like there is absolutely, hands down, no other way to go about life because your weight means everything to you.
Do this stuff or else suffer…and you certainly can’t bear the thought of what that suffering looks like.
“What? Actually find something I like about my body right now at this weight?”…get out.
“You’re telling me there is a way I can like my body when I look like this?”….hell no
“Learning to accept my body as it is right now is actually a possibility?”…..F&*! off!
What if you were to think about the control you give to food like this:
When you feel that you will only like yourself and be ‘ok’ with yourself when you’re at a certain weight it’s like handing the food devil a bat and saying:
“You have the power to make or break me, you’re the boss, I’m ALL yours to belt around WHENEVER you like”
WOW!!! How bloody harsh does that sound?
…..Would you ever think you would say that to anyone?
…..Would you ever want to say that to anyone?
…..Would you ever want to give anyone that power and control over you?
…..Would you every want anyone to feel that way towards you?
If you’re starting to feel like food has a bat constantly ready to swing, or if you feel the food devil is sitting high on your should, armed with the bat (ready to swing), then maybe it’s the right time for you to start to fight that bat right out your food devils hands and show food who’s actually the boss here.
Are you finally ready to actually acknowledge that weight is at the heart of the matter- the REAL reason you’re crazy about food?
Are you ready to actually acknowledge that what you’re doing and have likely been doing for so long is NOT actually getting you anywhere in the long run?
Are you ready to get off this diet-binge cycle wagon you’re riding and try something new?
Are you ready to face the possibility that there is actually something else out there that will help you to stop fighting food?
